Studio Assistant / Sales Assistant

The Role

Dunton Ellerkamp is seeking a part-time studio assistant/sales assistant to work out of the Greenpoint, Brooklyn studio. The candidate must live in the New York City area and be able to travel to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and Midtown Manhattan regularly. The position is 2 - 3 days a week, and the candidate must have Saturday availability.

Studio Assistant

The studio assistant will help in all aspects of running the jewelry studio where the pieces are produced. Prior experience in jewelry is not required but preferred. The studio assistant will spend most of their time on the bench performing hands-on tasks. As a self-taught jeweler myself, I am willing to train the right candidate in basic jewelry production skills.

Duties include:

  • Clean castings.

  • Prepare and package items for shipment.

  • Ensure quality standards are met.

  • Assist to maintain a general production schedule with deadlines in mind.

  • Picking up and dropping off projects in production at various vendors in Midtown Manhattan. Inspecting pieces upon pick up to ensure quality standards are met.

  • Maintain sound and cordial relationships with pre-existing vendors.

  • Tracking inventory levels.

  • Maintaining cleanliness of studio.

Sales Assistant

The studio also functions as a shop where customers are welcome to shop the collection. The shop is open by appointment and on a walk-in basis. The sales assistant would walk customers through the collection, field questions, and process transactions. Currently, the shop is open on a walk-in basis on Fridays and Saturdays. The sales assistant would likely work some, if not most Saturdays. The individual would assist in merchandising the pieces. As the brand grows, the sales assistant could work to grow relationships with potential retail partners or collaborators.

Overall Role Requirements

  • Interest in hands-on work — cleaning castings, applying finish to the pieces, soldering. Many of the skills can be taught, if there’s no prior experience.

  • Friendly and curious disposition, positive attitude.

  • Strong communication within the studio and when interacting with customers.

  • Interest in working with the general public.

    Not required, but preferred

  • Previous jewelry experience.

  • Retail or sales experience, preferably for a small brand.

Compensation

As a freelance position, it pays an hourly rate between $24 - $30, depending upon experience. The position will require the individual to fill out a 1099 tax form.
